The short answer is generally no.

If you already receive coverage for a GLP-1 medication such as Ozempic® through your Medicare Part D prescription drug plan for Type 2 diabetes, you generally cannot switch to the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program.

The Bridge Program was created to improve access to certain weight-loss GLP-1 medications for eligible Medicare beneficiaries who meet the program’s requirements. It is not intended to replace existing Medicare Part D coverage for medications already covered for Type 2 diabetes.

Learn More About the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program

If you are new to the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program, start with our complete guide, where we explain who may qualify, participating medications, and how the program works.

Why Can’t I Switch?

Medicare already covers medications like Ozempic® for approved medical conditions such as Type 2 diabetes through many Medicare Part D plans.

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program was developed for a different purpose—to expand access to weight-management medications for eligible beneficiaries who otherwise may not have affordable access.

Because of that, patients already receiving GLP-1 medications for Type 2 diabetes generally remain under their existing Medicare Part D coverage.

Who May Still Qualify for the Bridge Program?

Patients may qualify if they meet Medicare’s eligibility requirements, including:

  • Enrollment in Medicare Part D or a qualifying Medicare Advantage prescription drug plan
  • Meeting Medicare’s BMI and clinical eligibility criteria
  • Receiving a medical evaluation
  • Obtaining prior authorization when required
  • Being prescribed one of the participating Bridge Program medications

Eligibility is always determined on an individual basis.

What If I’m Taking Ozempic® but Want Weight-Loss Treatment?

Every situation is different.

Some patients have questions such as:

  • Am I receiving Ozempic® only because I have Type 2 diabetes?
  • Would another medication be more appropriate?
  • Do I qualify for obesity treatment under current Medicare rules?
  • Are there other Medicare-covered treatment options?

These questions require an individual medical evaluation.

Should I Stop Taking My Current Medication?

No.

Never stop or change your prescription medication without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.

Changing medications without medical supervision may affect blood sugar control and other medical conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I already take Ozempic® through Medicare Part D, can I switch to the Bridge Program?

Generally, no. Medicare beneficiaries already receiving GLP-1 medications for Type 2 diabetes through Medicare Part D are typically not eligible to switch those medications to the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program.

Does having Type 2 diabetes automatically disqualify me?

Not every situation is identical, but patients whose GLP-1 medication is already covered under Medicare Part D for Type 2 diabetes generally continue receiving coverage through Part D rather than the Bridge Program.

Do I have to see a weight-loss specialist?

Not necessarily. Medicare requires an appropriate medical evaluation, but the provider depends on your medical needs and the program requirements.

What if I’ve never taken a GLP-1 medication before?

If you meet Medicare’s eligibility criteria, you may qualify for evaluation under the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program. Your healthcare provider will determine whether treatment is medically appropriate.

Does Medicare require prior authorization?

In many cases, yes. Your healthcare provider may need to submit documentation showing that you meet Medicare’s eligibility requirements before treatment is approved.

Should I stop Ozempic® to qualify?

No. Never stop a prescribed medication without speaking with your healthcare provider.

Will the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program replace Medicare Part D?

No. The Bridge Program is intended to expand access to certain weight-loss medications—not replace existing Medicare Part D coverage.

Can DPC Medical help determine whether I qualify?

Yes. We can review your medical history, Medicare coverage, and current medications to determine whether the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program or another treatment option may be appropriate.
